Learning German: how to reach your next goals

Language & Education

Learning German is the most important foundation for an independent life in Germany. What matters is knowing your goal – and choosing a path that fits your daily life.

1. Know your level

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) divides language skills into six levels: A1–A2 (basic), B1–B2 (independent) and C1–C2 (proficient). A placement test shows where you stand.

2. Define your goal

For everyday life, B1 is often a sensible goal. Nursing and healthcare professions often require B2, and university study – depending on the institution – an even higher level. Check the requirements of your goal early.

3. Recognised certificates

Widely used are exams by telc, the Goethe-Institut, TestDaF and ÖSD, as well as the German Test for Immigrants (DTZ) that concludes the integration course. Which certificate is required is set by the relevant body.

4. Learn efficiently

Short daily sessions work better than rare long ones. Speak as often as you can in daily life, learn words in context and practise the exam format early. A study partner helps you stay on track.

5. Job-related language training

If you want to start training or a career, courses with specialist vocabulary help – for example for nursing, office work or skilled trades.

The requirements mentioned are guidelines and may vary by institution.
